  • how to leave for college

I'm 18 and wanting to leave for college out of state... my problem is that my parents have so many animals and I'm made to stay at home and take care of them, clean, and cook while they are at work.. my older brother does nothing but drink. I feel so hopeless and alone I've tried talking to my mom but she said I can't leave because nobody else could take care of our pets. It's sad to think about having to stay in this house any longer, my mom is a psychologist and works at a crisis hotline and she doesn't even care about my own feelings. I've thought about trying to get my self committed just so I could have some alone time but I don't have feelings of hurting myself I just want to get away from my parents.

Re: how to leave for college

    Hello –

Thanks so much for reaching out and sharing a little bit about your situation. It sounds like you are really ready to move forward with your life and start college and leave home. You mentioned that you do a lot around the home as far as taking care of the animals and cleaning and your family is giving you a hard time about leaving. It sounds like this is a tough and frustrating situation. It sounds like your mom is giving you a lot of guilt about leaving but it also sounds like you are really ready to have your own space. It’s understandable you are ready to be away from your family and the good thing is that at 18, in most states, you are considered an adult and can leave. Have you reached out to your family about how you are feeling and that you want to go? While we can’t make this decision for you there is always someone here to discuss safe options and next steps. Our services are confidential and anonymous and we are here to listen and here to help.
