I have a really hard time at home and I just want to leave. Can I get into trouble with the police? Can I face jail time? I don't have anywhere to go. I just want to leave the state and go somewhere else and start off fresh.

Hi there,
Thank you for reaching out to NRS. It sounds like things are difficult at home right now. We are available to help in any way we can. Unfortunately at NRS we are not legal experts so we don’t have any information as to the specific legal consequences for your running away. For individuals under 18 years old (typically) running away is considered a status offense in which case the police would return you to your legal guardians. However, every state and county handles these situations differently. If you would like to reach out to NRS through our hotline or online chat option and provide some additional information we are able to look up resources in your area that may be able to answer your questions specifically. Also, some youth have found that by calling the non-emergency police number for their area they are able to get answers to questions surrounding the legality of running away in their town.
Additionally, there are some things to consider if you decide to leave home. Like, for example: Have I determined where I would hope to go and how I would get there? Do I have any friends or family that would be able to help with food and money if I left?
As we mentioned above at NRS we are happy to discuss your plans with you and help with any resources or support you may find useful. We look forward to your call or chat.
Best of luck,
NRS
