  • i give up and i want to runaway.

Hi, I been dealing with verbal abuse from my mom for years now. It has been to the point we been in cps for her abusing me. But CPS really didn't look into it. My mom has been addicted to alcohol & drugs but now it's just drugs. Now her boyfriend is apart of it and my sister has been telling me "why can't you just die" I been trying so hard to block it out but I cant take it no more and I want to run away and not come back but I don't know what to do.

Re: i give up and i want to run away.

    Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to us today. It sounds like you are working hard to cope with being mistreated by your mom, her boyfriend, and your sister. That must be really hurtful. You don’t deserve to be abused, and it’s understandable that you are feeling like you need to leave.

You say that you are thinking about running away. This is a big decision, and we’re glad you decided to contact us as you think it through. Some things to consider: Do you know where you would go if you leave home? What strategies would you use to stay safe, and to get food and money? Some young people who leave stay with a friend or family member. Others might go to a youth shelter to be safe.

If you are a minor, your mom would have the option of filing a runaway report with the police. That would give them the ability to look for you and return you home if they did find you. It would also mean that if you are staying with somebody, they can sometimes get in trouble for harboring a runaway. You might consider finding out if there is someone you know willing to take that risk. Do you think that your mom will contact the police if you leave home? For some people it can be helpful to talk to their guardians directly and try to get permission to leave and stay with another adult.

We wish you the best of luck in working through this tough situation. We hope you will consider reaching out to us by phone or chat, to discuss the situation in more detail. We are free, anonymous, and confidential, and we are here 24 hours a day to help you talk things through.

I'm 16 turning 17 in three more months. I live in Texas, and I would love with my grandparents. But I honestly don't know if my mom would contact the police.

RE: i give up and i want to run away.

        Hi there,

Thanks for responding back to us here at the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you have a safe place to go. Though we're not legal experts here at NRS, we can tell you that, if your mother files a runaway report, at 16, you may be returned home. Seventeen can be a "gray area" age however, because in some states, police will not take a runaway report on a 17 year-old runaway. One way to know how police in your area will respond is to contact your local non-emergency number to ask.

If you'd like to talk everything through further, please feel free to give us a call. We're available 24/7 on our confidential and anonymous Safeline. We wish you the best of luck and hope to hear from you soon.
