  • 16 year Olds rights

My 16 year old cousin has lived with me for a year and his mom granted me temporary custody. She never came back for them we communicate she has never helped me with him I took care of his brothers and sisters as well in other ocasions. I live florida and we are relocating to Washington and now she wants to pick him and said she is not letting him go with me. He does not want to leave with her and in my home he has improved in so many ways. She really can't provide for him and she is an unfit mother. I want to keep this civilized but I would like to know what his rights are.

    Hello,

Thanks for contacting the National Runaway Safeline.
It's so good of you to take on the responsibility of raising your relative in the absence of his mother.
He is very fortunate to have someone like you in his life, with that being said since we are not legal experts at NRS we would like to suggest you consider seeking legal counsel .

You might also consider contacting the Florida Department of Children Family Services:

It sounds like this could be a matter for family court. We understand your frustration with having to be faced with controversy about relocating. Be sure to have any and all documentation showing he has been living with you for the past year. It might be very helpful in showing you as his caregiver and guardian. Does that make sense?

We hope this information helps you to get a better understanding of what your rights and the rights of your cousin might be.
You are welcome to call 1-800-Runaway (786-2929) if you would like to speak more on your situation.

Thanks again for contacting the National Runaway Safeline.
    Good luck and take care,
    NRS
