Thank you for reaching out to us. We are sorry to hear about your friend’s situation, it sounds like you care a lot about her and want to make sure she’s safe. She does have the right to feel safe and wanted in her own home. Just to let you know, we are not legal experts. What do we do know is that it’s technically not against the law for your friend to leave home without permission. Unfortunately her mom does have the right to press charges against your family for ‘harboring a runaway’. Are you willing to take this risk for her? If not, you can always talk to the police or child protective services and report that there is abuse in the home. She can also talk to a teacher or counselor at school about what is going on.

Runaway
My friend is 15 years old and she went out for the day, telling her mom where she went. She decided to come to my house and her mom knows where we live. Her mom has been telling her that she didn't want her and that she wasn't allowed back home. She then started threatening her to call the police that she is a runaway/ missing minor and that my parents will get charged. Her sister then started threatening her as well on my phone. Would her mom be able to call the police about this? And will my parents get charged? Please help. Her mom has hit her before and she has 4 other kids. Her mom verbally abuses her also. What should she do?
