  • Bullied at home

My older brother is a star player on the soccer team, my younger brother is really good at dancing and art and because of that my parents seem to have put them on a pedestal. I tried out for the girl's soccer team last year and didn't make it, I think it was because of an ankle injury and knee injury I had just recently recovered from but maybe not. Anyway, when I didn't make the team, my brother laughed at me, told me I would never be as good as him and to just give up. Despite that, I kept practicing and I've improved and I'm looking forward to the next tryouts. I am not the most athletic, artistic or best looking person but I try my best 100% of the time. My efforts don't seem to matter to my family and in their eyes I'm a failure. My mom repeatedly tells me I'm fat and that I should stop eating so I can lose weight, my brother makes fun of me when I'm practicing a sport even if he isn't any better than me and my dad makes fun of any small mistake I make from spilling a glass of water to getting a question wrong on a test. I have tried to believe myself when I say "its for my own good" but honestly I can't. This isnt "tough love" or helpful criticism, its pretty much bullying. I need help before I do something I'll regret.

    Bullied at home

    Hi,
Thanks for contacting the National Runaway Safeline.
It sounds pretty unfair for you to be ridiculed for trying your best; you don't deserve that from anyone.
You sound like someone with strength and perseverance, good for you.
Sometimes your efforts to show you will not let what someone says or does defeat your self esteem can be what stops another from using bullying tactics.
You are not a failure, it's too bad your mom would say that to you and that you other family members cannot seem to realize what their words are doing. Have tried telling your mom, dad and other family members how their actions have made you feel?
Tough love does not mean you have to be cruel. You deserve better than that.

Family mediation can be a helpful tool in trying resolving conflict.
Is there anyone you feel you can talk to about how you feel about the situation?
