  • Im 17 and need to get out

I'm 17 and don't have a job. I've been trying applying places looking for places to work but no luck. My parents think that because i'm 17 they no longer need to help me and expect me to find a job and live on my own. I don't have good grades in school I actually fail a lot and now that i'm an upcoming senior i need to pass every class or I don't graduate. I don't eat a lot anymore because my parents expect me to buy my own food and I don't have a job or money I only eat what my friends will bother to feed me. Can I get out? Are their any legal actions I need to do. Please Help

Hello, Thank you for writing to the National Runaway Safeline (NRS). This sounds like a very difficult situation for you and we are here to listen. It must be very hard for you to look for a job while trying to finish school with passing grades for you to graduate. Have you tried talking to your parents about how you feel when it comes to this situation and how hard it is becoming for you? We are sorry to hear about not being able to afford food lately, some other options may include local food banks or your current school may offer school lunch programs for those who qualify. Also, some schools have advisors or career centers that may help you with finding a job in your current location. Depending on your current location (city/state/school), NRS can help find you agencies that may be able to help assist. At 17 in most states you are still considered a minor so your parents usually are required to provide for you until you are 18. If you feel this may be a case of neglect you could also reach out to child services and report what is happening.

The National Runaway Safeline is here to help with any further questions or just to talk. We have a hotline available 24 hours a day at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). We also have a live chat available from 4:30p to 11:30p CST. Our services are confidential and anonymous and there is always someone here to listen and here to help. Take care and be safe.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
