  • Drinking Father

Hi, i am 16 and i have problems with my dad. He has had many problems with alcohol in the past and now he is drinking again. I know there is nothing i can do to make him stop according to research that ive made and the counselors from school. I am scared that things will get bad again and i dont want to experience that when that happens. i want to live with my sister who is 24,married and financially stable. If i dont feel safe at home (like emotionally) can i move out and live with my sister? i currently live in the state of texas. even if its temporarly? i hope that if i move out he'll see that his drinking affects me
    thanks

    RE: Drinking Father

    Hello there,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We are sorry to hear you don't feel safe at home due to your dad's drinking. It's very unfair that you have to worry about having another bad experience. You have the right to feel safe and wanted in your own home. Families Anonymous 1-800-736-9805 is a resource you can reach out to for help regarding alcohol abuse in the family.

It sounds like you have a safe place to go if you do decide to leave. Have you talked to your sister about your plan to come stay with her? Since you are still legally a minor, your dad does have the right to report you missing. Have you ever thought about reporting the emotional abuse?

Here at the National Runaway Safeline, we cannot tell you what you should or should not do. We can however help you find a safe place to go, or offer to find you some legal aid. We can be reached at any time at 1-800-RUNAWAY(786-2929) or by live chat at www.1800runaway.org from 4:30pm-11:30pm Central Standard Time. We look forward to hearing from you and wish you the best of luck.
