  • About to turn 18 in a couple of days and I want to move out of the house

I'll be 18 in a couple of days, and my parents and I have been fighting a lot recently and there is only so much I can take. I told them last week that when I turn 18 that I am going to pack up my stuff and move out because I want to be happy. And it's hard to be happy at home with all this fighting... I'm still in high school and I'll be a senior next year. I plan on moving out on the night of my birthday and moving in with my friend because her parents are willing to take me in. My parents threatened me that if I move out that I will not have a car, a phone or anything els. I will give them my car and my phone but I want to take my clothes, blankets, bathroom needs. And stuff like that. But I'm scared my parents will find a way to get me back home... Do you think they will be able to? Because I'll be 18.?

Thank you for getting into contact with the National Runaway Safeline bulletin board. It sounds like you’re going through a very stressful time right now with the way things have been going at you house. It definitely seems like you kind of put up with all the yelling and fighting between your parents. You certainly deserve to feel happy in your life as you put in.

You stated that you plan to move out when you turn 18 years old and go live with your friend’s house. It sounds like you have given this a lot of thought. What would be your overall plan when moving out (i.e getting all your stuff to your friend’s house, going to school, finances, etc)? How long do you think that you are able to stay there?

You said that you your parents can take away your car and your phone, which is understandable because it is assumed that they are the ones paying for them. But as far as your clothes, blankets, bathroom needs, etc. you can take all that stuff with you when you leave. Though because you are 18 years old, if your parents do try to keep your things and hold them from you, you could always get into contact with you local police to have a police officer help escort your items out of your house without your parents interfering. So that is always an option that you have to utilize. As far as your parents finding away to get you back home, the general rule is that in most states once you’re 18 years old you are legally an adult and can move out on your own.

Thank you again for writing into the NRS bulletin board, we are always here to listen and here to help you with everything we can.
