  • 16 soon to be 17 runaway from parental.

I am having major issues with my mother and can no longer be there. I feel unstable, extremely stressful, anxious, and pressured. I can no longer deal with the environment I am in. I have a great boyfriend who is willing to let me stay with him till things blow over at home and calm down. But my parent won't let me stay there instead has gotten my grandparents involved and is making me feel even worse. I just want to be able to stay with the boyfriend who is here for me and looking out for me. Am I able to leave and not be forced to come back by the polices if I go, since I am of the age of 16 will be 17 in 21 days.

    Hello -

Thank you so much for reaching out and telling us a bit about your situation. It sounds like you are going through a really tough time at home right now and at the point you would like to leave and live with your boyfriend. You mentioned that your mom and you are having issues and it sounds like it is really stressing you out. You said that you are turning 17 soon. In most states the age of majority, when a youth is considered an adult, is 18. So if you do go to your boyfriend's home your mom may have the right to make a runaway report with the police. Usually if that happens and the police find you they will most likely just bring you home. Police deal with 17 year olds differently depending on the city/state you are in so it could be helpful to contact your local police on a nonemergency line and just ask some questions about what the age of majority is in your area and if they would even take a report for a 17 year old.
