  • Want to get out of the house

Hi. I'm 25, which is probably a lot older than most people who post here about parental abuse, but here I am anyway. I live with my parents, but I'm fairly certain that my parents are emotionally abusing me, even though they don't mean to. I would like to move out at some point, hopefully fairly soon, but for now, I just want to know how to get out of the house even for just a little while.

On weekdays, I could probably just go to the university library and stay until about 6 PM before coming back home. But I have no idea what to do on weekends, which I think is when I usually feel like leaving. For example, today is Sunday, and I kept wishing I could get out of the house, but where would I go? I can't go to a friend's house, and I'm a shy nerd whose sanctuary used to always be the very home I now want to escape from.

    Thanks!

    Hi

Thanks for contacting the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you feel that you are being emotionally abused by your parents. We are sorry to hear; no one should have to deal with abuse in any form. It seems like you would like to get out of the house for a couple of hours but is unsure of where to go. Depending on the city and state that you're located in, there may be public libraries, coffee shops, and/or 24/7 restaurants you can go to over the weekend. Some shelters also have drop in centers that are generally open during the day.

We hope the information provided helps. The majority of the resources in our database are geared towards youth. However you can still give us a call and we can assist the best way we can. We can be reached 24/7 by dialing 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929).

    Best Wishes
    ~NRS
