  • Tired of dealing with irresponsible parents

Hi im a teenager whos parents hate each other. This is because my dad committed adultery with a women and my mom found out. She wont divorce him, because my mom says shes dependent on him and threatens me that I wont be able to become successful person like I dreamt of( i really want to be a doctor). After this incident I honestly lost respect for BOTH my parents since my dad disrespects my mo and m, dosent work a lot-- so no money in house, and my mom CONSTANTLY compares me to my dad-- which she knows I hate. Yesterday she compares me to him by saying I have a big mouth and am very rude, thats why I don't have any friends and will always be lonely. The truth is that I hate them both now BUT will and always TRY to respect them but it hurts now--- so sometimes my mom threatens me that I will not go to college because they cant afford it and that it is because of my horrid mouth--- this causes me to overload and I say few rude things. I talked to my mom about this but she keeps comparing me to dad and I even cried in front of her once, but she keeps going on. I am actually shy at school because I have a low self esteem and my teachers once told my parents this. In response my dad said he didn't have to worry about educating me since im a looser. and my mom uses this excuse to insult me. I have also been bullied at school because I am not rude or bold like kids are-- and they call me moron. I am feel very hopeless, the only thing that keeps me going is that I will be a successful doctor one day-- but my parents even crush that hopes when they threaten me that I will not go to college. -- my dad laughs after saying this.. thanks for at least reading my story and advice.

        RE: reply

        Hello again,

We are sorry to hear nobody else is supportive of you. Do you feel like family counseling would be of use? It can be difficult to not feel discouraged when your family is so unsupportive. Sometimes schools will have resources you can utilize. One option would be to contact a trusted teacher at school or counselor about your situation. If you would like to further discuss your situation, we would encourage you to call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY(786-2929) or by live chat at www.1800runaway.org from 4:30pm-11:30pm Central Standard Time. We look forward to hearing from you and wish you the best of luck.
