I so fed up with this!

My dad has been verbally abusing me for 7 years. Nothing is ever good enough for him! I take my AP classes, do my homework, do well, but he continues to insist that I'm stupid, I'll never get into college, and I don't have any type of real future. I'm sick of it. My mom doesn't even try to stop him. Three years ago, he had a major operation that he wasn't supposed to live through. I thought that was my ticket to freedom. But he lived. Curse modern medicine. I planned to run, but I held off too long, and got a major illness myself. Now I'm contemplating running again. It's ridiculous! It only gets worse! I can't do anything to make him happy, and as much as I hate him, that still really bothers me. I wish he would just go away so I don't have to.

Thanks for writing in. It sounds like your dealing with a pretty frustrating situation. Nobody deserves to be called names and be put down, especially by a parent. You mentioned that this has been going on for about 7 years. What was your relationship with your dad before that? Do you feel like something happened and there was a change in the way he treated you? It sounds like a very difficult situation and it's understandable that you've thought about leaving before. You said that your mom doesn't do anything when your dad starts talking down to you. Have you ever talked with her about this and how that makes you feel? Have you ever talked with anybody else about the situation? Friends, other family members, or a counselor?
If you did leave the house did you think about where you would go? Do you have anywhere safe that you could go? What do you think your mom and dad would do if they found out you left? Do you think that there is anything that could happen to make it bearable to be at home? Are there things that you have been able to do in order to cope with this difficult situation?
