RE: Done with my backward overprotective family and life
Hi there,
Thanks for reaching out again. It sounds like you've tried some things to make sure that your family doesn't search for you. That's good.
Since you are 22, your family can't legally force you back home. If they hold you at home against your will that is against the law. You also are not mandated to tell them where you decide to go.
We hope this information helps. If you want to talk more or want us to look up places where you might be able to stay, call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). If you can't call, you can chat with us through our website (www.1800runaway.org) from 4.30pm-11.30pm Central Time.
We hope this information helps.
We loo forward to your call or chat.
Best of luck to you,
NRS

re: Done with my backward overprotective family and life
Hi there,
Thanks for reaching out tonight. It sounds like you’re going through a lot with your family. You deserve to have your own independence. We aren’t legal experts here, but we are able to talk about what might happen in general and what general rights you have. Because you are older than 18, you have the right to determine where you want to live, regardless of where your family wants you to live.
They may call the police to file a missing person’s report again, but the police can’t force you to return home. Sometimes people in your position decide to write a note to their family to tell them that you are safe and that you have a place to go. That way it would be more difficult for them to file a missing person’s report.
We hope that this information helps. If you would like to talk more or have any further questions, you can reach out to us through our hotline at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). We are here 24 hours a day. If you can’t call, you can chat with us through our website (www.1800runaway.org) from 4.30pm-1.30pm Central Time.
We look forward to your call or chat.
Best of luck to you,
NRS

Done with my backward overprotective family and life
I'm female, 22 years old and am suicidal/schizophrenic but on meds for both. I'm also gypsy. Gypsies believe in arranged marriages and don't give their daughters much freedom. I don't want to be in an arranged marriage or follow gypsy culture/rules anymore because they're backward in my opinion. I just want to live on my own but they won't let me. I once snuck out and stood to some friends house for a few days and didnt bother telling them where i was so my family panicked and called police. They filed me a missing at-risk person. When I learned how worried my family was I forced my self to come back but I didn't really want to but I did just to make them feel better. I still want to be on my own but I know if I sneak out again they will repeat the whole damn process over and they'll relentlessly search for me. I just want to know that the police can't force me to come back or anything due to my mental condition if I do leave again.Tags: None
