I'm 13, and I need more freedom. My parents confine me too much, especially because I am the eldest child of four siblings, the two younger ones being step siblings. I have enough free time, but I need more to work with. I've been thinking about doing a cross-country runaway to Wisconsin (i live in Washington) so I can live with an old friend. I've always followed the rules, but I need to break them other than going on candy binges. I've also thought about smoking, because I know how to get my hands on some, but I don't want to resort to that. Please, help.

RE: 13 and I need to get out
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to us for help. It sounds like you feel like your parents do not give you enough independence. Have you thought about talking to your parents about how you feel? There are lots of things to consider before you decide to run away. How will you get to Wisconsin safely, and how will you survive on your own? If you leave home without your parent’s permission, they will probably make a report with the police, who will look for you and make you go home. If your old friend in Wisconsin takes you in or tries to hide you in any way, he or she could be charged with a crime. It sounds like you have just been thinking about running away, so it was really smart of you to contact us. We can help you figure out what to do, and find out what parts of your plan might be risky or dangerous.
If you need someone to talk to, please give us a call at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). We are here to listen and support you in any way that we can. All of our services are completely anonymous and confidential. We are looking forward to your call.
Best of luck,
NRSPlease remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
