Thank you for reaching out to us. It sounds like home isn’t a safe place for you right now and you’re trying to figure out how not to be required to return back home. That’s a very good question and one that we’re never sure of the answer for due to laws changing from state to state, even county to county. We’ll try and help out as best as we can.

You talked a lot about conflict and abuse with your mom…that’s not ok. No one should be hit and you don’t deserve to be treated that way. You stated that the police responded one but nothing was done. Do you know if Social Services was ever involved with that incident? We ask because the only entities that get to decide if a youth should be living somewhere else if Social Services. And if you ever wanted to file an abuse report with them to inform them that home/mom is unsafe and abusive, we could help you do that. Making that report is the first step to alerting authorities that you should not be at home.

You also mentioned you were 17. When will you be 18? That might be a good thing to see if it’ll help you come into ‘age of majority’ automatically. If you’ll be 18 soon AND your state is a state that allows 18 year olds (sometimes 17 year olds) to live on their own, you might be in luck. But first it’ll be good to figure out what the laws in your state are.

im 17 i ran away recently. i am safe and need help with figuring out how to legally get away from my mother. she is very vindictive and controlling. she is verbally and mentally abusive. there is not one day that goes by without her putting me down or just being so hurtful that it got to that point where i took an over dose this past Easter. i am not sure what my rights are and i really need help to stay away from my mother. she has hit me previously, the cops contacted. nothing much was done though. i just had to leave for about a week. it is awful feeling unsafe in your own home. i would be willing to go back if she were to leave.
