Re: 24 and working and wanting to run away!

    Hi again,

It sounds like you're trying to put together a good plan. That's great! Unfortunately we are not legal experts here and in terms of the operations of the police, we would not be able to answer.

It's understandable that you might be intimidated to call. You can contact them on their non-emergency number (search online "(Your county's) non-emergency police department"). The questions that you have asked us are good questions to ask the police.

At this time we have provided you with as much as we can. For further support, we strongly encourage you to contact us directly at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929), and look forward to your call. Lastly, please note that we offer a live chat via our website at www.1800runaway.org every day from 4:30p to 11:30p CST.

    Good luck,

    NRS

Thank you for your reply. Kind of intimidated to call them, now do I have access to know whether or not I'm on a missing list? So I can just call them and say hey I'm not missing, just moved out? Is there such a thing?

    Hey,

It really does sound like it’ll just boil down to a tough decision you’ll have to make because really, no one knows what can happen: if your family is how you say they are, they might just make a report on you no matter what. Technically, no one should look for you because you’re not missing and you’re 24. Outside of that, it’ll depend on how the authorities will handle it. If you want to inquire about how they will do that, you might have to call them directly. Asking them the questions you’re asking us might be the way to go. Only they will know what the procedures will be.

    Best of luck,
    NRS

Thank you for the reply! Yes, I have thought about leaving a note or some sort of message after I leave. But, now I'm running in circles thinking that if I do send them the message. They will call the police and look for me. Do the police have the right to disclose where I live? I'm also thinking about changing my name once I move. I don't want to live the nightmare of being paranoid and think they are looking for me even after sending them the message. Honest to God I cry every night thinking I have no choice. I'm a good person, a college graduate ( straight A student), a workaholic, I'm not some junky kid or adult who doesn't listen to their parents, I have done everything for them. I support my parents, they don't work. We are a family of 7 and I'm the only one with income. I even thought about sending money (anonymously ) to them even after I move out. (((( They never appreciate what I do. I'm 24 and I have been very patient with them and I love them, but I cant handle the verbal and physical abuse anymore ((( Crying as I write this No matter what I done and how much I helped its not enough. They always make me feel guilty, the verbal abuse is a never ending audio playing in my head. ((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

    Hey,
Thanks for reaching out to us. Sounds like you’re going through a tough time making a decision. We’ll try and help out as best as we can.

The legal age a person can move out of the house without being filed as a runaway or missing person is 18. That means that at 24, you can leave home without people looking for you and returning you back home. You bring up a valid concern where your family will think you’re missing. Is there a way for you to (after leaving home) leave a note or message for people to understand that you’re safe and fine and moving out? That way you have alerted them that you’re making your own decisions and your in fact not missing.

That’s the only way we can think of to deal with that. Is there another way you can stop them from thinking you’re missing?

We hope that helps because aside that, all we know is that you have a right to leave without having been brought back home.

    Best,
    NRS

24 and working and wanting to run away!

Please advise! I want to move away from home but Im afraid that if I do, family members will claim im missing and look after me. Im facing horrible abuse. What can I do? Moving out is no option! I want to run away and live on my own. My fiancé is helping me out in this whole process in moving with him to Florida. I'm living in Cali. I found a similar and promising job in Flordia. (same job im pursuing now) Now if I runaway and my parents claim I'm missing would they search for me and bring me back home????? Please answer ASAP
