  • Don't want to live at home

I'm 15 years old, and I don't feel like I can be safe at home anymore. I've always been depressed, but recently I've become extremely suicidal. When I get around my mother it gets worse. If I'm out of the house I'm happy, but when I'm around my mother all I can think about is suicide. I'm terrified of what I might do if I stay with her. What can I do? I have a job and about a thousand dollars saved up. I tried to run away once, but my mom dragged me to the hospital and forced me to go home with her. Is there any legal thing I can do to get away from her? I don't want to run, but I will if I have to.

    Hi there,

Thanks for contacting the National Runaway Safeline. Wow, it sounds like you’re going through a really hard time right now. It can be so overwhelming when you don’t feel safe in your own home, so it was smart of you to reach out for some support.
You mentioned that you’ve been thinking about suicide. Have you told anyone about how you feel? It can be important to have someone to talk to when we feel that way. One resource that might be helpful to you is the National Suicide Hotline.

They are available to talk at 1-800-273-8255 and are there 24/7. They might be able to talk to you about how you’ve been and help you to think about some ways to support yourself. We understand that this can be a hard time and a time when you may need a lot of support. So, good job on reaching out.

It seems like you’re a hard worker too! You’ve got a lot of good things going for you. Have you heard about emancipation? This is a process that you may qualify for. To find out more information on this, you can contact your local police department. If you want, we can help you come up with some more options. You can call us at anytime at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). We are confidential and anonymous. If calling isn’t your thing you can chat with us through our website (www.1800runaway.org) from 4.30pm-11.30pm Central Standard Time.

We’re looking forward to hearing from you.

    Best of luck,

    NRS
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
