  • What do i do?

When i was little my dad used to beat me and my mom repeatedly until i was at the age of five when me and her ran away and lived in a domestic violence shelter until she got on her feet . well coon after we got our own place i soon began cleaning every day and eveyrtime she came from work the house was supposed to be clean and i was to cook her a meal everyday . well now we have a new place we've lived in for about 6 years now and for those past years consecutively i have been cleaning and cooking for my mom and if i don't do something i get yelled at and cursed at and i never get to go anywhere and if i do she threatens to call the law if I'm gone for to long so i never had a chance to go anywhere and I'm stuck in this house unable to go anywhere and last summer i went and stayed with my dad for the first time in forever and i hated it down there he was mean to me so i came back and i hate it here and i want to move with my older brother who is moving to Savannah,Georgia soon because he noticed to how my mom uses me and complains when i wanna go somewhere but I'm only 16 and i wanna leave can you help me ? i have 6 month until I'm 17 but i can stay here any longer i don't want to stay any longer is there anyway i can move with my brother? Re: what do i do?

Thank you for contacting the National Runaway Safeline and sharing your story. You are incredibly brave for reaching out to us looking for help. We’re so sorry your life has been filled abuse by both of your parents. It’s understandable you’d want to leave when your mom won’t let you have a life of your own besides chores. It’s particularly concerning that she makes you sleep in the bed with her at your age and you don’t want to. Have you talked to anyone about the details of what’s going on at home, with a counselor or teacher at school perhaps? They are mandated reporters and they might be able to help you find resources for your situation. Your brother sounds like he really cares about you if he’s willing to take you in like that. Your mom has legal custody of you so we’re not sure how your brother could legally take you to Savannah with him without him getting in trouble or you being filed as a runaway. If you can wait six months until you’re 17, is there any family member close by you could stay with for a little while or perhaps participate in after school activities to give you time away from home in a way that might make it more acceptable to your mom?

It’s understandable you’re frustrated and fed up with the whole situation but if you can we urge you to give us a call at our 24 hour confidential hotline 1800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or live chat with us any day from 4:30-11:30pm central time. We’re here for you as support no matter what happens or what you decide to do.

    Best of luck,
    NRS Supervisor
