  • my 17 year old nephew ran away Tuesday - in ventura county - so cal

My nephew ran away on Tuesday - turned off his phone, has a car.... Has made no contact with anyone- his friends and family are shocked - he is considered an at risk runaway due to some depression issues- we are sick to our stomachs with worry- the police have been notified and are searching - do you have any shelters or areas we can contact? Send a flyer with his pic? What are our odds of him coming home? Any advice or expertise would help....thanks

Thank you for reaching out and contacting us about your nephew. It sounds like this is a very difficult time for your family and hopefully, we can provide you with some resources or assistance. We are sorry to hear that he ran away.

It sounds like you have contacted the police and that they are helping you search for him. What sorts of things are they doing to help you out? There are other agencies that may be able to help you out as well with reporting him and putting him in their databases. They can also help out with making up posters and distributing.

National Center for Missing and Exploited Children: 1-800-THE-LOST (843-5678 ) or www.missingkids.com

    Operation Lookout: 1-800-566-5688 or www.operationlookout.org

    Child Find: 1-800-426-5678 or www.childfindofamerica.org

There is also a website called Beyond Missing that has a poster template for family members to make posters on; their website is www.beyondmissing.com.

It sounds like you are looking for shelters in the area where he may go and we definitely do have those resources in our database but we would need to know what city and state you are located in. Now, every shelter is different but generally speaking, they will contact the parents or legal guardians for youth who are under 18.

You can contact us at anytime if you have further questions or would like more resources, please call us at anytime. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929); we also have online chat from 4:30 PM-11:30 PM (CST), 7 days a week and that can be found on our website.

We look forward to hearing from you and wish you the best of luck.

Thanks for your info., I will contact those sources. His photo has been given to the PD and they are on the lookout...we just want to make sure he is safe and alive - pacing and driving around town seems helpless at this point. Hoping he runs out of gas and money and realizes his family loves him...and he is welcomed with open arms. I will call for a list of shelters in our area.

Thank you for getting back in touch with us. It sounds like your family has been doing everything they can and it's great that you have contacted us for assistance.

It sounds like your nephew has a car and a cell phone but the phone is turned off. Do you know if he has any access to money? If he does have a bank account or credit card, they might be able to tell you if and where it has been used at. Also, does he have a Facebook page or any other social media sites? That may be one way to reach out to him or to alert others that he is missing.

Again, we are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week so please call us anytime for any resources or other assistance.

We look forward to hearing from you and wish you the best of luck.
