Hi im 12 years old and i really want to run away. My parents dont care about me. Neither does anyone else. Most people that i know always say that my parents are rich and i ahve everthing i want. Well its not like that. I dont have everything i want. I have five sisters amd im just the loser in the family. I feel loke no one cares about me. Like when i make a new freind inschool im always worried that theyll just end up hateing me. I packed a few time in my life but always ended up unpacking because i never know where to go. Ill be turning 13 in april of 2013. My dad if i get straight A's for the rest of the year ill get $50. Which i twas only offered thaymuch money because my dad doesnt think im smart enouh. So when i get the.money im going to run away but where do i go and is it true that you can runaway in californa without having the cops on your back?

    Re: running away

    Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to us at the National Runaway Safeline. We are sorry to hear that it seems like your family does not care about you, and that you are thinking of running away. It sounds like you are feeling very alone, and are going through a difficult time. Have you ever talked to your family about the way you feel?

How do you think your parents would react if you left home? Do you think that they would file a runaway report with the police? Typically when a youth runs away, and the parents file a runaway report, the police may do anything from actively looking for the youth to only interacting with the youth if they happen to come across you. If you are filed as a runaway and the police do find you, they will usually bring you home.

In order for NRS to be better able to provide helpful resources you can call us on our 24hr crisis line 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929), or contact us via Live Chat from 4:30pm to 11:30pm (CST) at 1800RUNAWAY.ORG

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Take care,
    NRS
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.

        re: running away

Thanks for reaching out and posting on our bulletin board. It sounds like you are dealing with a difficult situation and that you’re trying to handle it the best you can. We are not legal experts, but we can tell you that in most places running away is considered a status offense. What that means is that if you are under 18 and your parents file a runaway report, you would be returned to them if you were picked up by the police.

You mentioned working in California. According to the California Department of Industrial Relations website (http://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/dlse-cl.htm) you may hold a job at the age of 13, but there are specific restrictions on where and when you can work (http://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/MinorsSummaryCharts.pdf).

If you are in a place where you need shelter, we can help you find a safe place to go; if you would like to call or live chat with us we can check our database for those resources. We can also conference call shelters with you to ask about what programs they offer and if they can help. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or by live chat at www.1800runaway.org from 4:30 pm-11:30pm Central Standard Time.

We look forward to hearing from you and wish you the best of luck.

Thanks for contacting us again. I just want to let you know that we are not legal experts, but if you are under 18 most states consider you a minor. Running away is not illegal; it is just a status offense, so if you are picked up by the police, or decide to return home the runaway status will go away. If you runaway and your parents have filed a runaway report and the police find you they will most likely return you home right away. You could always try contacting your local police department and ask them anonymously how they deal with runaways.

As far as going from Florida to California, how are you planning on traveling that far? Once you are in California, you would still be considered a runaway and there is the possibility of you being sent back to Florida, but we don’t know exactly what laws will be applied to you. Like I said, we are not legal experts, but you can call us anytime, we are 24/7, to discuss how you can stay safe no matter what you decide to do.
