Re: Running Away
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to us during this difficult time. It sounds like things are very stressful for you at home. Although you did not state what city you are currently in, the laws do vary from state to state. Where would you go if you did run away? Since we are not lawyers, we cannot give legal advice.
One way to get the most straightforward answer would be to contact your local law enforcement and ask what the local laws are in regards to runaways. If your family calls the police and files a runaway report, the law has an obligation to return you to your legal guardians. Technically running away is not illegal. However, anyone that you would be caught staying with could possibly be charged with ‘harboring a runaway’.
Here at the National Runaway Switchboard we can help you find shelters in your area. We can also give you referrals and help you explore options. We are available to talk to you 24/7 at 1-800-RUNAWAY(786-2929) and also by live chat at www.1800runaway.org from 4:30pm-11:30pm. We look forward to hearing from you and wish you the best of luck!
