I don't feel important

Hi,
I just want to start things off by saying that I come from a middle class family with a ok financial life. Im 13 and my parents and siblings neglect me almost everyday. My sister has always been the one that stops me from commiting suicide or running away from home. My brother bullies me, i dont have many friends, my mom makes my life a living hell and my dad is on a leash to my mom and listens and does everything she wants him to do. I dont have the worst life in this world but I feel that I dont recieve the respect and the attention that i deserve. In fact i recieve neither of those things. If im not wanted, quite frankly i dont want to be here. In my state i think it is illegal to run away so im stuck. ANY HELP WOULD BE MUCH APRRECIATED

Thanks for reaching out to us. Sounds like you’re going through a lot of intense stuff and you just want to be respected and given loving attention instead of negative treatment.

That’s not a lot to ask for.

The one amazing thing we read in your email was that your sister seems to be a very strong, positive presence in your life. And it sounds like she knows about the suicidal thoughts and the running from home ideas. How is it that she ‘stops’ you from doing that stuff? What does it take for you to feel like she’s right and you shouldn’t do those things? And how old is she, by the way?

Can she continue being a supportive person for you? Can she help you figure stuff out?

If you are feeling like you need to run from home, do you know where you would go? Because running from home is pretty serious. And not serious in the sense of getting in trouble. But more like it’s difficult to stay safe and out of danger. How do you feel like you can maintain the same level of safety as you need?

Running away from home isn’t quite considered illegal but it is considered a status offense. That means that if you’re not home, your parents can make a runaway report on you and if you get picked up you will be returned home.

We hope this isn’t sounding hopeless because there are plenty of other things that could be done to be able to fix stuff at home. Would you be open to exploring some of those options? We’re here to do that with you.

She always tries to talk me out of doing things. I feel somewhat better after she does but the feeling or running away always comes back.
