  • Parents don't listen

    Hi
im 14 and i've considered running away before, but i've never had any place to go, so i never did. I feel like my mother dosent listen to me at all. I feel closer to my fathers girlfriend then i do my mom, and i've only met her once. i tell her things i dont tell my mom, things i would never think of telling my mom, i feel like she dosent want to hear me. i started cutting myself, but i stopped after a few days because i realized that wouldnt do me any good. i hate that my mom dosent listen ans i've tried everything to make her see how i feel, but nothing seems to work. Sometimes she makes comments to me that make me feel like im not wanted at home, but i dont know if she really means it or not. i would appreciate some help, because i dont want to run away but, sometimes i feel i have no other options...

    Re: Parents don't listen

    Hello,

We are sorry to hear about the situation with your mom. It sounds like you wish you were closer and would like help. We aren’t here to tell you what to do, but we are here to listen, go through pros and cons, and try and help with options. You mention that you had started cutting yourself and then stopped, which we imagine took a lot of strength.
It sounds like you are able to talk to your father’s girlfriend about some of the things that are bothering you, even if she isn’t the exact support you were hoping for. One option (if you haven’t tried) might be going to counseling with your mom. Or, if you truly feel you need a break, we can try searching for shelters in your area. If you’d like to share your location, we can search for resources. Another possible option for shelter would be to visit National Safe Place’s website, www.nationalsafeplace.org. Participating “Safe Place” sites help youth get to shelters. For immediate assistance, you are welcome to contact us directly at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). We are available 24/7 and are anonymous and confidential. We hope that helps and please let us know if there is anything more we can do. Best of luck!

Thank you for responding to me so quickly. I actually like the support my fathers girlfriend gives me, and most of the time i wish she was my mom instead. I actually do go to counseling, but i've tried getting my mom to listen through that, but it dosent help. You said if i really needed a break, that i could look for shelters in my area, will my parents have to know if i go to one of these shelters? I think a shelter might be good, for alittle while, thanks for the link

        Re: Parents don't listen

You’re very welcome! Please remember that you can reach us at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) 24 hours a day if you ever want to discuss your situation more in depth.

As for shelter, let us know what city/state you're in, that way we can find you some specific resources. Shelters have the legal responsibility to call your parents 24-72 hours (depending on the shelter) after you've arrived. So you at least has some time there before they have to alert anyone. That may help, no?

We also have a live chat service available through our website from 4:30p to 10:00p every day. Best of luck with everything and please feel free to reach out to us anytime. Take care.

            RE: My mom dont care

Thanks for contacting the National Runaway Switchboard. We are sorry to hear about the way your mother treats you. It can become pretty difficult to live in a household where you feel as if your mother doesn't care about you. You stated that you want to run away; have any of your concerns been addressed with your mother? Have you shared your feeling with anyone else? If you decided to leave home, we could try to locate a safe place for you. Would you be able to give us a call so we can discuss your situation in more details?

We are available 24 hours 7 days a week and be reached at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). Our hotline is toll-free, anonymous, and confidential. We hope things work out for the best and we look forward to hearing from you.

            Best Wishes
