Hello. I am a 20 year old male with issues at home. My mother has been asking me to get a job since I was 18, and I have been applying to companies left and right to no avail. I am a brain cancer survivor, I was diagnosed at the age of 5. I survived, but hair on half the side of my hair won't grow, and the top of my head isn't smooth. I look strange to people, so I never get hired. My mother is violent towards me because I cannot get hired. My brother is recovered drug addict with anger issues and although I am older than he is, he steal from me, he attacks me, punches me and once tried to stab me. I have no idea what to do or where to go. I had previously left home for 6 months and then came back hoping things would change. I have no friends to stay with or family. My dad is in the hospital and no longer lives with me. Please help me.

re: help me
Hey,
Thanks for reaching out to us. Sounds like things with your family are not stable and you might need to be in a safer/calmer place. You’ve taken a big step here and we’ll try and explore what’s available to you. And it’s awesome to hear that you’ve survived all of your battles up to this point.
You’ve given a lot of details about how the folks around you aren’t being supportive but are there any people that ARE helpful and supportive of you? Have you ever worked with any social workers or mentors that could give you some advice or support? Are there other family memebrs that you’re close to or that look out for you? If there are any people like that, it might be good to lean on them for support. If there aren’t people like that…we’re here. Would it help to talk and explore these things over the phone? If it even helps the tiniest bit, we’re here 24 hours a day for that.
It sounds like you’ve always lived with your current family: have you ever thought of living anywhere else? You are of age and can decide where you’d like to live. Depending on what city you’re in there are options available for people your age and you can apply for transitional living programs. Would living somehwere else be an option?
If there are other things that you think you might be looking for, please contact us 24 hours a day at 1800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) and we can talk about what your options/right may be.
Best of luck and we hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks for the swift reply. I used to have psychiatrists evaluate us, since we were a dysfunctional family, but no such support is available to be at the present time. I am an adult, but I have very few resources. If I would be able to support myself, I would be out the door in a heartbeat.
I would be very much interested into looking into a program that can give me transitional living for a short period of time. I was looking into Job Corps to see if there is any chance for me to get a job, but finding a place in Miami, FL is not easy, or cheap. So saving up money is my main priority.
I just need to understand what options are available to me, I was trying to just wait it out. I am a college student, I completed around 15 months but it's become harder and harder to study while suffering the stress of my current home. I wished I could stay with someone else, but I don't have someone to give me that helping hand.

Hi,
Again, thanks for looking to the National Runaway Switchboard for help. We are glad that we can be here for you and hope that what we will provide for you will in fact help. You sure have been through struggles, so we commend you much. We are more than happy to look into resources for you but this is easiest through conversation on the phone. Since there are questions and answers with follow-up questions depending on your answers. If you would like to also contact us through chat we are available from 4:30-10:00pm CST everyday. We definitely want to help you figure out a place to go and start your next step and get out of what sounds like a hectic and somewhat unsafe environment from what you have said. You can also call 211, which is an information line to get any other phone numbers you may be looking for. But keep in mind we can make outgoing calls for you to rid you of that legwork and if beneficial have you conferenced in with them.
Please give us a call, we look forward to talking with you.
Good luck,
