  • no other choice

Hi, I'm 13. I currently have been living in new jersey for about a year because my father is in the coast guard and he got tranfered here. I lived in maine for 12 years of my life. And I need to go back. Living here has made me lose friends and my grades are ds and fs. When I was in maine I would get high honours. it seems like my father hates me. Ill be talking to my mom and he will just start saying these rotten things to me looking like he wants to kill me. I don't like it when he looks at me like that. And then, even when I don't do anything, they get all mad at me for asking for something. I miss my friends and my family and I need to go back. I can't stand it here anymore.

    Re: no other choice

Thank you for contacting us at the National Runaway Switchboard. It sounds like the move from Maine to New Jersey has been really hard on you. It sounds like it has impacted your relationships with friends and your grades so it is understandable that you would feel the way you do. We imagine it’s very difficult to think your father hates you and listen to him say rotten things to you.

You mention you need to go back, but we aren’t sure if you are planning to run away or not. If running away is something you are considering, here is a link to some common questions to think about. http://www.1800runaway.org/youth_teens/nrs_help.html Or, if you are planning on just going for a visit, do you think your parents would give you permission? Some youth find it helpful to talk through the situation with a close family member or friend so that is sometimes an option. Other youth might benefit from seeing a counselor. If that is something you are interested in, we are able to locate resources should you like to provide us with a city or general area where you live.

Although we aren’t sure of your exact plans, we hope you remain safe and please feel free to contact us at 1-800-RUNAWAY. We are anonymous, confidential, and available 24/7. We are here to listen and provide support to our callers and would be happy to further explore your situation with you. We wish you the best of luck and hope you remain strong.

    Sincerely, NRS
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
