Hello,
Thank you for contacting us at National Runaway Switchboard for support. We imagine this must not be an easy time for you. It sounds like living in such an environment has taken its toll and now may not be entirely safe. Do you feel safe at home? We imagine cutting has become a matter of coping for you as you are struggling to make sense of it all. Does your mother use drugs in front of you? Have you mentioned this to an adult such as a teacher or counselor? Aside from offering support, we can also provide resources specific to your need. You deserve to feel safe in your home. We understand the need to want to get out. We are concerned for your safety as it is our priority and hope that you can find a way to call us if you wish to discuss options such as a safe place or if you want to take other action. Have you thought of making a report to Child Protective Services or the police?
Our mission is to help runaways and homeless youth to remain safe and off the streets. Although we are not in a position to tell you what to do or where to go, we want to offer our services to help you figure out the necessary steps to keep you safe from harm. Although we are confidential and anonymous and operate a federally designated crisis hotline and website dedicated to 24 hour service, we also function as mandatory reporters. We do not define abuse or neglect but we can report any sort of wrongdoing in the home to the proper authorities. If you were to call us to report it, we take the information and get it over to those who investigate in your area. They may come out to your home to look into the matter. We do not guarantee the outcome but they may or may not take you out of the home.
What do you want to see come from this issue? We are glad you reached out for support and hope to hear from you directly. We are all trained the same way and want to continue to offer help where we can. If you are seeking to cool off from home we can also locate shelters for you to stay. We have a massive database filled with resources in your area. We can be reached at 1800RUNAWAY 24 hours a day. Our number is toll free from any phone. We wish you the best of luck and that you find ways remain strong and safe.
